ITHACA, N.Y. –
Cornell evened its score with the Princeton men’s basketball team Saturday night in Ithaca, avenging a 20-point Princeton win earlier this season by handing the Tigers a 60-51 defeat.

Much of the atmosphere that must have been in Newman Arena Friday night when the Big Red clinched the Ivy title was still present a night later as Cornell (21-9, 11-3 Ivy) looked to complete its second straight perfect home Ivy slate and beat the only league team it hadn’t beaten this season.

It was also Princeton (12-14, 7-6) that ended Cornell’s 19-game Ivy League winning streak with a 61-41 victory on Feb. 6 in Jadwin Gym, but ending the Big Red’s 20-game home win streak wasn’t to be.

Princeton’s Dan Mavraides scored the first basket and the Tigers were even with the Big Red at 7-7, but Cornell scored the next seven points to make Princeton chase the rest of the half.

Cornell’s largest lead in the first half was 12 and grew to as much as 15 after the break. The Tigers came within six on a Pawel Buczak bucket with 10:42 to play but got no closer.

The Tigers were hurt by Cornell’s 51.1% shooting from the field, making it the first time all season Princeton opponents have had at least a 45% field-goal percentage in three straight games. It was also a major improvement from the 31.8% Cornell shot in the first meeting this season. Princeton shot 35.4% from the field in the rematch with the Big Red.

Douglas Davis led the Tigers with a game-high 16 points while fellow freshman Patrick Saunders also had a solid night, scoring a career-best 13 points with seven rebounds. The highest Cornell scorer was Ryan Wittman with 12.

Princeton will cap the 2008-09 season at Penn Tuesday at 8 p.m.
