Men's Basketball Closes Season, Beats Penn 59-56 at The Palestra
bullet Box Score

PHILADELPHIA -- The Palestra has seen larger crowds for more meaningful Princeton-Penn games, at least more meaningful as far as the Ivy League standings go.

But Sydney Johnson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of men's basketball, has been through enough of these games to know it isn't just about how many people are in the seats or whether the Ivy title is on the line. Those factors add to it, but at its core, it's still Penn against Princeton.

This time, for the first time in five years in The Palestra, Princeton came out on top, 59-56.

Johnson has lost in Penn's building more than he has won, coming up short his first three times as a player and his first time as a coach. It made Tuesday night's win that much sweeter.

"I can't put it into words," Johnson said. "If I tried, I'd probably break down."

Certainly, an Ivy League title chance would have been nice. If Princeton (13-14, 8-6 Ivy) had swept last weekend, the Tigers would be in position to tie Cornell with this win and force a one-game playoff.

"It's bittersweet," Johnson said of the near-miss of the regular-season finale having Ivy title implications. "But Princeton beat Penn, and I'll focus on that."

It was never more than a two-possession game. Princeton led by two at the half, 27-25, and led by six at 38-32 with 13:29 to play.

But Penn (10-18, 6-8) pulled ahead at 56-55 on a Jack Eggleston dunk with just under a minute to go, and for a moment The Palestra's home roar had every bit of the Penn-Princeton rivalry behind it.

Dan Mavraides converted two free throws on Princeton's next trip, Jason Briggs pulled down a rebound on an Eggleston missed three-pointer and Mavraides sealed it with two more from the stripe with 4.4 seconds left.

Mavraides, who scored a game-high 17 points, finished as Princeton's second-leading scorer as a sophomore a year after scoring 11 points in the whole of his rookie season.

Douglas Davis, a freshman who, with 10 points, was one of three players in double-figures for the Tigers, became the first freshman in program history to finish the season leading the team in scoring, at 12.3 points per game. His 333 points this season were the third-most for a freshman in Princeton history, behind Spencer Gloger's 336 in 2000 and Chris Young's 387 the year before. Davis outpaced the 329 scored by Kit Mueller, who went on to become the program's career runner-up in scoring.

The victory also gives Princeton its first winning Ivy League season since 2006, its most wins overall since 2005, its first second-place finish in the Ivy League since 2006 (rebounding from two finishes at the bottom of the Ivy standings in 2007 and 2008), an end to a five-game losing streak to Penn overall and a stop to a four-game skid at The Palestra.

So, there are all of those superlatives to celebrate. But Johnson called the win bittersweet for a reason, and the Tigers will work toward giving the regular-season finale more meaning in the Ivy standings in 2010. There are plenty of areas to work on, and Johnson and Mavraides took a moment to point out the 16 offensive rebounds Penn pulled down.

"We didn't do a great job with that," Mavraides said, no doubt also remembering that Penn grabbed 18 boards in an overtime win at Jadwin Gym last month. "We did end up pulling the game out, but that's something we're going to work on."

The offseason will be long and the work plentiful, but closing the season with a win over a rival makes that time pass just a little more smoothly.

Men's Basketball Holds Off Brown, 56-48

bullet Box Score

PRINCETON -- Rookie Douglas Davis had 16 points in his first appearance off the bench this season to help the Princeton men's basketball team to a 56-48 win Friday night on Carril Court.

Sydney Johnson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of men's basketball, went with size against a Brown team that won by 18 points in Providence two weeks ago, starting the 6-8 senior Mike Strittmatter along with usual starting center Pawel Buczak.

"We wanted to go with a lineup that extended our defensive presence," Johnson said. "We need contributions from everyone."

The Tigers (11-12, 6-4 Ivy) got those contributions from Davis, who had another big shooting night by going 5 for 7 from the field, as well as six points from fellow freshman Patrick Saunders, who has also logged some starts this season.

Princeton was up 25-18 with 8:10 before halftime until Brown (7-18, 1-10) went on a 14-2 run bridging the break. That led to Brown's largest lead of 32-27, but the Tigers responded.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Marcus Schroeder and Dan Mavraides turned the five-point deficit into a one-point lead, and Princeton scarecely trailed thereafter. Up 50-48 with three minutes to go, Princeton benefited from two Brown turnovers and four missed shots from the to seal the game.

Princeton's shooting improved from 34.6% before halftime to 45.8% after the break for an even 40% on the night. Brown dipped from 44.4% in the first half to 24% in the second for 34.6% for the game.

"This is a team that beat us by 18 points," Johnson said, noting that it wasn't Princeton's best game. "It was a win."

The Tigers will hope for more learned lessons to pay off Saturday when Yale visits Carril Court. The Bulldogs outrebounded Princeton by 20 in New Haven two weeks ago, and Brown narrowly won the rebounding battle tonight, 36-33. Chris Skrelja led all players with 16 boards.

Saturday's game will tip at 6 p.m. following a moment

Men's Basketball Tops Yale 62-54 on Senior Night
bullet Box Score

PRINCETON -- What's in the past is in the past for the Princeton men's basketball team, but the present is going quite well.

Avenging a pair of double-digit defeats from two weeks ago, the Tigers made it a weekend sweep with a 62-54 win over Yale Saturday night at Jadwin Gym.

Seniors Mike Strittmatter and Jason Briggs started together for the first time, each chipping in multiple buckets in a game that was scarecly outside of a double-digit spread in the second half.

"This is our best response yet," said Sydney Johnson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of men's basketball at Princeton. "These teams manhandled us up there, so I'd say this is definitely our best response of the season."

Fifteen days after Princeton (12-12, 7-4 Ivy) was outrebounded by 20 at Yale (12-14, 7-5), the Tigers won the rebounding battle 24-22. No Bulldog had more than five boards, and Dan Mavraides was both the leading scorer and rebounder for Princeton wtih 16 points and six boards. Alex Zampier and Ross Morin led Yale in the scoring column with 19 and 16, respectively.

But it wasn't a rosy night from start to finish for Princeton. After the Tigers raced out to a 14-0 lead, making 6 of 7 from the field in the first five minutes, Princeton went scoreless for more than nine minutes during which Yale cut it to 14-13.

Princeton scored the next seven points, however, and the Tigers took a 27-20 lead into the break. After halftime, Princeton never trailed despite seeing its lead trimmed to as little as one at 35-34 with 15 minutes left and four at 56-52 with 1:18 to play.

The Tigers will head to Columbia and Cornell with the Ivy League title still in play for the final full weekend of the league season next Friday and Saturday.
